Oooook. Just got back from my second spanish class. First off, note to self; don’t plan work after that, brain fried. Second, getting the gist of a conversation and speaking the language properly, quite different proposition.
Finally, even though these classes are fun, I’m sure the “you want to learn a language, get a girlfriend who speaks it” school of thought would have been a better way to go. Much harder to find than a 130$ course though. Much.

Even though there are many interesting Spanish-speaking women all over Montreal?
Thing is, though, you could get a lot of practise by just hanging out with Spanish-speakers (women and/or men). Immersion is certainly a very efficient way to learn a language. At least, for colloquial speech. It all depends on what you want to do.
Now, if you want to learn Spanish in order to impress Spanish-speaking women, that’s a different story. You could possibly just fake it and count on the charm of having a thick accent.

My suckage at finding someone seems to be completely unrelated to language or interestingness.

That’s step two, I have a few friends who speak spanish, I felt I needed a base first though.

It is a different story and it’s not why I’m learning it :-p.
