Jason is talking about a number of “outboard devices” we use for memory, how things we used to have in mind are now in our little widgets. True. He also says:
I’m sure with all that storage space in my brain freed up for other things, I’m able to do so much more with my limited mental faculties. If only I could remember…
I know in my case I’ve been saying that all the passwords are taking up a lot of space. Bank password, other bank password, ATM, other ATM, email, other email, hosting account, OSX system, Ultimate league, Ultimate team site, Textpattern, client Textpattern, other one, Movable Type, other Movable Type, ftp, ftp, ftp, ssh, phone, voice mail, lock on laptop, lock on laptop at client’s, lock on locker outside, dotster, saje, gmail, google adsence, île sans fil, iTunes, Amazon, del.icio.us, flickr, paypal, iStockphoto, Backpack, another Backpack, timesheet for client, accounting software, Threadless, Veer, 43 Things, Photostack, client photo gallery … You get my drift.

Use a password manager … Simple “password manager” on sourceforge.

quite good, if only windows. Then use the cleared up space in your mind to remember the name of the cute girl … :-)
It is true, that technology oriented people often seem to struggle remembering simple things like phone numbers as we use so many helpers to do those chores. Understanding is always better than remembering. We don’t know anything but we can figure anything out. Except the name of the cute girl
:-)
Windows? Ouach! If I want them all automatically remembered I could just use the autofill in Firefox (most of those mentionned are web apps) and the OSX keychain but I prefer having them somewhere unhackable ;)
As for the cute girl name, it’s more beer and unexplainable lack of attention than an unavailable memory space problem…
I just use my birthday. Doesn’t everyone?
I’m using 4 personnal password kit.
– The easy one for stupid and quick registration sites or game account – The more complicated one, for secure password – The 8 caracter password for website/app with high security standard – Credit card, ATM card, etc
Who need more anyway ?
I actually have a different password for every one I mentioned. Although “generated” from a trick so I can find them again.
Or if you are of the paranoid type, and for not usefull websites that you know will spam your account after having registered.
