826 Quarterly

826 Quarterly . I picked this one up when visiting 826 Valencia the pirate store / writing center created by Dave Eggers, it’s a great place with a fantastic cause so I bought a couple of things as encouragement/donation. The book is a collection of short stories written by the kids who attend the writing workshops given by the center, most of the ones chosen in this issue (spring 2005) were written by authors 14 to 17 years old.

It’s a bit uneven but still very impressive, some of the stories are fantastic, some less so but, of course, wetter I like them or not is not the point, getting them to write and express their ideas and thoughts is the point and it succeeds beautifully. The stories are grouped according to which workshop they attended and it’s fun to see what they did with the restrictions, suggestions and techniques.

Recommended.
