I never knew

Je fait maintenant parti d’un nouveau projet, j’y collaborerai avec Ben, Phil et Sylvain. C’est un nouveau blogue techno qui vise à regrouper et donner plus de visibilité aux communautés Montréalaises oeuvrant au sein des startups techno. Notre “focus” de base est dans les domaines du web et du mobile mais nous couvrirons aussi l’industrie des jeux et des “sciences de la vie”.

Jetez un coup d’oeil sur l’entrée écrite par Ben sur son blogue pour plus de détails. Portez particulièrement attention aux besoins côté collaborateurs, on écriras pas tout ça tout seuls.

Je vais pousser pour un bon mélange anglais / français mais un des marchés visé est celui des compagnies, fondateurs et programmeurs hors Montréal que nous voudrons informer et attirer ici, le mélange ne seras donc peut-être pas 50/50. Ceci dit, la meilleure façon d’y retrouver du français, c’est de s’impliquer et d’y écrire dans la langue de Lemeur Molière.

I’m not 100% sure, I’d have to look through archived files but I believe this new look is the 10th design of i.never.nu. Not bad for a seven and a half year history. With this new theme I’m going kind of halfway to the art directed blog posts trend. Proponents of that trend art direct each post, just like each article has it’s own look in many magazine. I love the idea but I post too much stuff to do that and, well, I’m not a designer. What I will do though is to regularly change the background image and some of the colors and spacing. When I find images that I like I post them on Céboça and some of those I’ll single out and build a “theme” around.

To accomplish that pretty easily, I wrote a few lines of PHP code which do the following:

1. Check which week we’re in, look for a css file with that week in the name (in a certain directory on my server).
2. If it exists, load it.
3. If not, determine the month and do the same search.

<p>When neither exist, the design is all black and white.</p>

<p>In those files I define the background image, the colors for the description on the left and for the meta post information on the right as well as play around with the spacing to properly frame something in the background image. There&#8217;s also a PHP file of the same name which contains credits for the picture, with a link. That file gets included in the template and shows up at the top right. There isn&#8217;t one now because it&#8217;s a picture I took so I didn&#8217;t feel I needed to add the credit.</p>

<p>Right now the whole site uses the same style but in the next few hours I&#8217;ll add to the code so that on single post pages, the week or month used will be the one the post was written on. That way, unless I completely redo the site at some point in the future, posts will retain a bit of their timely context with the styling that was on the site when they were published.</p>

<p>Other than those changes, I also need to test on other browsers. Currently it works in Safari and Firefox, at some point I&#8217;ll do a check on IE8-9 and Firefox Windows (very few chances that there will be bugs there since it works on FF Mac).</p>

<p>[Update later the same day] Concerning the time context of posts, this <a href="http://i.never.nu/respect-de-lorganisateur/">post from two weeks ago for example</a> uses a style matched to the 27th week of 2010 and that post will use the style of that week, whatever the look on the frontpage.</p>

Paul Ford wrote a great post about editors and how they could be useful on the web. Or more precisely, how we are again having problems with search, how we have to find new ways to search and order content and how editors have many of the abilities that could make a difference.

Ça fait longtemps que je considère écrire une entrée la-dessus mais je laisse toujours tomber. Sauf que j’ai lu ça ce matin et j’approuve :

Environ 50% des personnes qui s’inscrivent à PodCamp Montréal chaque année ne se présentent pas à l’activité, ce qui a un impact considérable sur nos dépenses. PodCamp Boston a vécu une situation désastreuse pour les mêmes raisons il y a deux ans et les organisateurs ont également décidé de demander un engagement financier de la part des participants.

Ils doivent maintenant charger pour s’assurer que les gens prennent la peine de réfléchir avant de s’inscrire! Grâce à la facilité de s’inscrire et désinscrire, sur Facebook entre autre, le monde ne réfléchissent plus avant de s’inscrire et n’ajustent pas non plus leur inscription quand ils changent d’idée. Résultat; 50% de “chokage” pour PodCamp Montréal et des chiffres similaires ou même pire à plein d’événements. Pathétique.

Faites un effort svp. Mettre “maybe” c’est parfait quand c’est “maybe”, je le fait super souvent. Mettre “maybe” par politesse pour ne pas dire “no”, ça n’aide aucunement le(s) organisateur(s). Mettre “yes” pour être fin en sachant qu’on ira pas, c’est encore pire. Trois semaines sans répondre quand un clic suffit pour dire non? Come on!

Il y a cinq ans on avait pas tellement d’événements techy/webby/DIY/médias sociaux à Montréal et on s’en plaignait. Depuis, quelques dizaines de gens ont pris les choses en main et organisent plusieurs événements intéressants. De nos jours certaines semaines il y a quelques chose tous les soirs. Pour la majorité d’entre vous, le seul effort à faire, autre que se présenter, c’est de dire si vous allez y être. Me semble que ça vaudrait la peine de le faire comme du monde non?

Un peu de respect pour les gens qui se dévouent à organiser.
