Pratique

The set of human systems necessary for action in this complex, unpredictable set of conditions, combining rationalization with human agency, learning and adaptation, is as different from managed systems and perfect markets as the new Toyota is from the old General Motors, or as the Internet now is from AT&T then. The hallmarks of these newer systems are: (a) location of authority and practical capacity to act at the edges of the system, where potentialities for sensing the environment, identifying opportunities and challenges to action and acting upon them, are located; (b) an emphasis on the human: on trust, cooperation, judgment and insight; (c) communication over the lifetime of the interaction; and (d) loosely-coupled systems: systems in which the regularities and dependencies among objects and processes are less strictly associated with each other; where actions and interactions can occur through multiple systems simultaneously, have room to fail, maneuver, and be reoriented to fit changing conditions and new learning, or shift from one system to another to achieve a solution.

iPhone Augmented Reality Demo

Awesome. To think of what my previous phone was like! I’ve had an iPhone for what, a year and a half? It still feels sometimes like I’m picking up a piece of hardware from the future, like the guy who found a Terminator hand or something, the jump this phone took is just incredible and it’s still evolving so quickly.

In case you’re not sure what you are seeing (hardish to understand what’s behind the phone, which is essential) : The camera is picking up what’s in front of the phone, the app is scanning the scene, picking up on the position of 3D objects in front of it and then inserting it’s own imagery, angled and shaded and sized to fit within that scene.

The iPhone becomes a window, a filter, through which you see a different, augmented, version of reality. Ok, minor augmentation but the possibilities are pretty crazy and put in the context that this is a phone with that processing power is a bit nuts.

Then there is a whole group of people who feel that social media is something more fundamental than simply a marketing tool. Some people believe that social media is not a channel to sell things but it is something that should be used purely to engage with your customers. An extension of ethics – something so core to your business that you should be just “doing it” and not thinking about what you get back from it. I’m of the mind that it’s a pretty diverse platform; you can use it to sell just as well as you can use it to listen.

Polizei

Something I already knew but that was much reinforced throughout the last two and a half months, especially in Germany; European police are frickin’ scary! Forget the short women we have here and the somewhat relaxed demeanor and uniforms. Over here it’s army like dress and kit, guys usually my size (6’2”) and up with broad shoulders and serious/menacing faces and who come out in numbers pouring out of vans at any sign of the slightest trouble. Don’t fuck with the pOlice.

Behavioural Innovation

Umair Haque is probably the closest thing to a maître à penser I have right now. His examples in this presentation are, like the ones Malcolm Gladwell uses, sometimes too simplified or tweaked to better fit his theories but they don’t invalidate what he is saying. Some fascinating stuff about innovation and the 21st century economy.
