He’s been doing it for months, even years now but I’m still very pleasantly surprised at the level of discourse Obama is bringing to the US. When’s the last time you saw a politian tackle such a complex issue as religion in such an even toned, clear eyed, sensical manner? When’s the last time you saw a politician tackling something like that without pandering to anyone, except maybe common sense?

A few of recent projects for which people were pushing for rapid delivery :
- Ready for three weeks; client hasn’t entered products in system yet.
- Ready for three months; client hasn’t filled in all sections of site, including the most vital.
- Ready for two weeks; client hasn’t started entering content yet.
- Ready to enter content for two and a half months; client hasn’t sent content.
It’s like the boy who cried wolf, at some point I just don’t believe anyone. Don’t trust people to know on their own when they need things, always try to get validation for deadlines, especially ones that would result in nights or weekends becoming work days. A lot of people tend to ask for quick deliveries without having taken the time to think through the next steps.
(Even having done that for most of the above projects, you see the result but at least except for one I didn’t end up working overtime for those deliveries.)

I mentioned this in conversation last week; any subject becomes interesting when presented by a super passionate person. Here are a few examples from the ever excellent TED conference.
Robert Ballard
If you only watch one of these, make it this one. This is a guy who’s PASSIONATE about his work. Extremely interesting stuff about our oceans and some crazy numbers and examples on what we don’t know about them.
Nathan Myhrvold
The former Microsoftie and bonified genius on his life of fascinations. (side note : must have made for an annoying sound level when he was having conversations with Bill Gates, how come nerds have voices like these?)
Benjamin Zander
Music, the love of music and how to interpret / appreciate classical music.
Wade Davis
He’s got a bit of a weird rythm to his speech but some great experiences and thoughts concerning the Worldwide web of belief and ritual.

I’m not a job board type of blog but this one is just too well written (and Akoha is a good bunch of people) and funny to pass up. Akoha are looking for a community gardener
When you walk past, crying babies begin to burble. You call people and they hear a smile over the phone. Your emails cause people to forget their troubles. When friends ask for help, you’re always willing to lighten their load and brighten their day. You make the sun shine and the grass green and the birds sing.

This presentation by Phil Fish would play very well and fit right in at TED methinks.
[Update] Took out the embedded video, WTF is with the autostart??
Phil’s a co-founder of Kokoromi.
(The video can be found here.)
