Pownce

Kevin “Digg” Rose’s new company and application is out. Pownce is a kind of Twitter++, very similar workings plus more granular way of targeting messages plus file, link and event transfer. I’m liking everything about it so far. Built in Django, desktop app made with Adobe Air, uses Amazon S3, very clean and friendly design by Daniel Burka and coded by a woman, Leah Culver (probably not the most p.c. thing to draw attention to that fact but I think it’s cool), even the name of the parent company is fun; Megatechtronium. Great job all around.

Local Stuff

I realized this morning when posting about the iPhone that I hadn’t posted in 8 days!! That would partially explain why so much local stuff has happened that I haven’t posted about. That and the fact people are doing lots of cool shit.

Pecha Kucha

Or, as I like to call it, Chupacabra. Boris and James organized the first ever Montréal Pecha Kucha and it was excellent. Really really good stuff and a different crowd than what I’ve been around recently. I don’t think anything was boring but especially good were Phil Fish for his general mirth, Matt for his perfect timing and “Europe, where history comes from”. Especially fascinating projects were Akemi Tazeki with her soft interface exploration—the fact it was a school project brought on a very rare “maybe I should have gone to university” moment for me—and Haig Djambazian ’s robots. Looking forward to the next one.

How data will save the world

Hugh posted is superb presentation, how data will save the world, hopefully I’ll get to see it presented live at some point but the slides are a good read in themselves.

Datalibre.ca

In the same vein, the same hyperactive Hugh launched datalibre.ca a blog about a very important issue; urging governments to make data about canada and canadians free and accessible to citizens. It’s funny that he would post the fabulous Hans Rosling talk from last year because just a few minutes ago while having lunch I watched the no less impressive Rosling talk of 2007, awesome speaker and a heck of a closing.

What Is Net Neutrality?

Another hyperactive one, Michael is part of the team that launched whatisnetneutrality.ca, another important project that aims to demystify a huge issue that is largely misunderstood and certainly not covered enough (or well at any rate) in Canadian media.

Top Web Apps in Canada

Our own Heri wrote a nice piece on Read/Write Web covering Top Web Apps in Canada. It’s not directly “local” but Hugh’s (him again!) Librivox, Evan and Maj’s Wikitravel, Mark’s I love to play, Carl’s Ajaxwhois as well as Ben and Fred’s Standoutjobs and Kakiloc (half Montréal based) were all mentioned, good visibility. Akoha probably should have been mentioned too.

Defensio

And finally Defensio, a new and so far very impressive spam plugin for WordPress was beta launched yesterday by the same Carl mentioned above and Mat.

danah has another great thought provoking essay, this one on viewing American class divisions through Facebook and MySpace. Fascinating stuff, I’m looking forward to her continuing research.

iPhone Reviews

I haven’t really read them yet and I’m sure most interested people have found them already but there you go, for my own future reference, iPhone reviews and (US) plan details.

  • David Pogue for the NYT

From the skimming I did do, they all seem to like it and it mostly lives up to the hype.

The plans are out, all unlimited data and starting at $59.99, not tooo bad. I’m surprised SMS isn’t unlimited too but, you know, can’t get them to catch up to Europe in one go I guess.

Interesting detail, it seems you will activate through the iTunes Store so you can just pick up a box, go home and complete the process there. Nice.

Now for Canada, when Steve? When?

Boutique and More

Tara is getting on my nerves. She manages to write more interesting posts than I even find the time to comment on. Regularly she’ll write a great post that I’ll keep in a tab until I can re-read it and try to add something. Then, like now, I realize they’ve been there for a while and I haven’t taken the time. Dumb.

Anyway, to point readers that way without making them wait for me, and to close a few tabs. I’m simply using the old “quote and link”.

Boutique

This so “me and my friends”, perfect description. Couple of favorites from her 10 examples:

Enjoy shopping at your local pharmacy, grocer, clothing store where you know the owners and feel yourself going out of your way to give them business even if their prices are higher because you prefer to have the personalized service over cost reduction … Will not pay much attention to the prices at these stores because the experience is worth it … Prefer smaller restaurants that have a beautifully detailed menu who serve interesting wine pairings, have ’stories’ for each dish and are a locals best kept secret (said restaurants don’t have to be pricey, but aren’t really a bargain). The service is personal and you can’t have dinner there in under 2 hours.—Boutique Era

From a follow up post:

It’s a way to connect. To friends. To the environment. To your heritage. To your neighbors. To your senses…etc. And, it is a way to express yourself. We’ve understood that we have purchasing power. That if we use that purchasing power towards our passions and beliefs (sweat shop free, recycled materials, locally grown free from chemicals, etc.) or as ways to tell others who we are, we feel like we have a bit more control over this mad, mad consumption culture we live in…..or something like that.—What Boutique is: part I

Bite-Size Media

In this one it’s actually the second part that hit home for me, concerning the different types of brains:

Me, I’m an information broker. I reside somewhere in between the logical and the explorer never quite able to pioneer or to compute. But I’m really good at understanding, then translating the information into more actionable items. The opportunist/entrepreneurial brain is similar to the information broker brain, but it takes that translation and creates tools that help people cope with both ends of the spectrum. All ‘types’ of brains are necessary to get anything done, but the explorers are often undervalued and misunderstood (throughout history, they have often died penniless, having the opportunists and information brokers taking their ideas and profiting). I believe the outcry on the idea of continuous partial attention today is equally misunderstood and undervalued.—Bite-Size Media: Is Continuous Partial Attention really bad?

Growing Memes

Five trends / directions that are gaining traction, circles back to “boutique” with item 4.

The future seems bleak, indeed, but I have noticed some growing memes in the recent year that have led me to believe that things are actually changing…actually shifting towards a more Lorax POV. Each theme overlaps in a significant way and is fueled by Open Source principles and the Web 2.0 world spirit as well. They are: The Triple Bottom Line, The Science of Happiness, The Non-Zero Economy, Boutique, and Community.—Okay, we won. But what’s the prize?

Next time, I’ll make sure to react for real and not weeks late ;)

Doing Local Right

Great presentation by Simon Willison, Doing Local Right, he used to be at LJ World and they do some great things over there, superb products. While I’m on the subject, is there a Montréal equivalent to Lawrence.com ? I’m talking real equivalent, not some watered down crapass “supposed” to be site, something of a similar quality to what the LJ crew put together.
