The importance of electronics in F1

A typical PC uses a single processor! ... In F1, this kind of unit includes more than 15! Overall, the total capacity of the unit is estimated at roughly 2000 MIPS.—The importance of electronics in F1

Battlestar Galactica, Best of 2005

Battlestar Galactica is the best show on tv in 2005 according to the Times. Notice that 7 of the 11 (there’s a tie for 10th) are on cable.

Not Too Bad

For some reason, every year I get to the last few weeks of December, start looking at the best of lists and 12 month recaps and start thinking how time goes quickly and how I haven’t done all that much. Then I start looking back more thoroughly and once in a while I realise the year wasn’t that bad. Some of the good stuff that happened in 2005.

  • Started working under an actual incorporated structure, “all growed up”.
  • Did a bit of planning for and attended the 5th anniversary party for Yulblog.
  • Attended a conference here in Montreal, met some cool people and made some useful connections.
  • Launched (and recently closed) the Yulzine Duality project.
  • Went to Paris for fun.
  • Worked full time in June and most of July on one of the biggest Canadian site relaunches ever with some good friends. (Can’t link the project yet)
  • Spent a great week in Bar Harbour with good friends.
  • Got the last of the money from STA and it wasn’t a problem.
  • Redesigned this blog a couple of times.
  • Soft launched the new company site.
  • Attended a second conference, this one in Paris, Les Blogs 2.0, thx to m-c
  • Ended a year long safe and stable contract and found a number of new ones to replace it.

Couple of things to fix in other areas for 2006, hopefully resulting in an even better list at the end.

The 50 Greatest Gadgets of the Past 50 Years

Here’s PC World’s official (and entirely idiosyncratic) list of the top tech gadgets of the last half century. (via Martine)

Eating away from below: what’s happening to enterprise software

Though definitely not as sexy to talk about as tagging, and mashups, and whom Yahoo acquired today, I think that the trends we’re witnessing in enterprise software will have a far greater impact than much of what’s being discussed.—Eating away from below: what’s happening to enterprise software

Mutant

This genealogy website (I guess that’s what they do) offers a beta of their face recognition functionality where you can chose to find matches in their celebrity database. I tried it with a couple of pictures of myself and got some weird combinations. First pic gave me:

Angelina Jolie
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Wyatt Earp
Kurt Cobain
J.K. Rowling

While the second came up with:

Camille Saint-Saens
Albert Camus
André Malraux
Bob Dylan

It’s funny to have 3 french guys for the second one since it was a variation of this picture taken in Paris. I’m happy with the Wyatt Earp and Kurt Cobain in the first one but how much can something that matches Angelina Jolie with J.K. Rowling be trusted?? Fun though.

Sci-Fi Ads

Some very funny, well made Sci-Fi channel ads here and here.

Malkovich Malkovich

John Malkovich, all around cool guy, also sells clothing, including tshirts and the site use the best way of showing the product I’ve seen. Guys, click on the blondes, girls click on the squared jawed serious doods, or vice versa, it’s not like there’s anything wrong with that.
